What is a Pokemon wi-fi league?
For those of you who have been playing the game actively in the wi-fi community for the past generation, you're probably fairly familiar with the basic idea, but for those who are new to the concept or just to Pokemon games in general, I'll go ahead and explain the basic concept. Essentially what I'm planning to do here is to set up a Pokemon league to give some sort of fun structure to the basic wi-fi battle set up. Obviously with the new random matchmaking in the new games, it'll be a lot easier to get a random battle fix than ever before, but this league would hope to add some more long term interest beyond just mauling some 10 year old kid with a team full of ubers. (No offence to the 10 year old kids out there who could probably whoop my ass at the game.. I know you exist, somewhere.)
Anyway! The basic idea would be to create a league that more or less follows the basic in-game pattern. There would be several gym leaders, an Elite Four, and after a while, probably a champion that needs beating, too. The Elite Four would probably be elected from existing gym leaders since obviously you couldnt face the Elite Four til you'd beaten all the existing leaders, so we wouldn't need them straight away.
Battle Rules
Now, every league needs its rules, so we'll be dealing with them in this section of the post. I've not decided on a specific ruleset just yet but for now you can assume that we'll be playing the 'Standard' metagame ruleset that Smogon has come up with, with a few slight tweaks. These rules are as follows:
- 6 on 6 single battle.
- Species Clause: you may only use one Pokemon of a given species on a team (e.g. you can't have two Scizors on the same team).
- Sleep Clause: You cannot put two of your opponent's Pokémon asleep at the same time.
- Evasion Clause: A Pokémon cannot use Double Team or Minimize.
- OHKO Clause: A Pokémon cannot use Fissure, Guillotine, Horn Drill, or Sheer Cold
- The ability Inconsistent is banned.
- Using one or more Pokemon with Drizzle and one or more Pokemon with Swift Swim on the same team is banned.
You'll notice I left out the section about ubers, which is what I'll move on to talk about now. If you're a trainer challenging the league, you can use any tier except the Ubers tier, which you can read all about on the Smogon website. (http://www.smogon.com/dp/tiers/) Note: These tiers WILL change as the game is released and more data is collected. Gym leaders are entitled to use one uber/legendary Pokemon in their set up, except for Arceus, who we'll consider banned until future notice. The Elite Four and the Champion may be entitled to use more at some point, as well as any future special gym types.
An exception to this rule is the Dragon gym which is not limited in its usage of ubers due to the limited number of dragon type Pokemon available to choose from and it's position as the hardest of all gyms, a precursor to the Elite Four.
The reason gym leaders are allowed to use an uber and normal trainers are not is simple: gym leaders are inherently at a disadvantage since the trainer knows what type of Pokemon they'll be facing and can prepare a team that counters this. Having skilled gym leaders and allowing them the use of one uber helps to tip the scales back towards a balanced contest.
League Rules
- No illegal hacks. Legal hacks are permitted.
- You may only challenge a gym trainer once every three days, and after beating them you may not challenge them again on league terms. Feel free to have a friendly rematch though if you want.
- Win or lose, you must post up the match result. You can post as detailed a story of the match as you want but make sure to include the final score. (6-0, 0-1, etc)
- Your Pokemon should be level 100.
- Remain polite and friendly to other league members whether they be trainers or gym leaders. This is a game, its about fun. Dont take it too seriously.
- Gym leaders need to remain active. If you don't notify us of your absence and disappear for more than a week then we'll have to find someone to replace you.
- No disconnects. Play every match through to the end or we'll have to blacklist you.
Challenging the Elite Four
Once you have obtained eight badges from either of the two branches, you have earned the right to challenge our Elite Four (Niteclaw, Jaycee, Alex, and Ryuksapple) The Elite Four can be challenged in any order but you must beat them all consecutively in order to reach the Champion (Eve) If you are beaten by any of the Elite Four, you must start again from the beginning.
The Champion is the ultimate challenge, she may field any possible team that she wishes and thus you can expect to face some of the most terrifying Pokemon and strategies in the game. Facing the Champion works differently than the other E4 matches. If you are defeated, and the score-line is 2-0 to the Champion, or lower, you are offered a second chance. This chance is only offered once however, if you lose a second time, you must start again from the beginning. The Champion will always use the same team for the second chance but on a future challenge, she may use something totally different.
If you succeed in defeating the Champion, you are honoured in the Hall of Fame for the rest of the BWFL's existence, and earn the right to challenge the current dominant victor over the E4. This is a 'champion of the moment' who has beaten the E4 and remained undefeated by any other champions. Beat them and you prove to all that you're the best!
