Chapter 2
It was raining. The heavy drops fell with harsh intent, cleansing the earth below. Each drop tapped Allen's ragged cloak as he slowly staggered along the forest trail. The rain didn't bother him, it was actually welcomed by him. The rain helped him get his mind off of his problems. He had run out of food, His wounds had not healed yet, and he had no idea where the nearest town was. The forest that contained the broken cathedral was much larger than he expected. But that wasn't his most pressing difficulty. He felt as if had he lost his purpose in life, like he was hollow on the inside. He thought everything would have changed. Alexander's death was supposed to make him feel alive again. Avenging his mother was supposed set him free from the nightmares of that horrendous night. Thoughts raced through his mind, questions.
What have I done with my life? Was all of this for nothing? Why do I still feel lost?!
The rain fell harder, his mind fell along with it. His concentration stunted by the loss of motivation. So stunted that he didn't hear the ruffle of the trees.
Large paws stepped out of the dark forest, the creature eying the distraught boy with hungry eyes. It sensed his distracted, wavering spirit.
"Kufufu, Yet another taken by the spirits. Broken men don't last long in this forest." it said with a clearly distinctive female voice.
It crept slowly, raising its claw, licking off any dry blood.
"You will make a delightfully sweet snack!" It spoke once again, but a male voice was present now.
The beast leaped in the air, heading towards its prey.
"Let the feast begin!"
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
He didn't notice anything, his own mind was fighting against him to heavily to feel the beast's presence. The only reason he was able to defend himself was due to a miracle. Among the chorus of unyielding questions, memories, and doubts, Allen heard a voice that did not belong to him. It was familiar, he was sure that he had heard it before. Its message broke through his thoughts like a Gun shot.
"Turn around Allen!"
The chorus was silenced and his mind cleared. Allen ripped his blade out of the sheath as he spun out. The blade collided with the ivory colored claw, sparks flying. The collision pushed Allen into the mud around him. He sat up and got a good look at his foe. It was a wolf, at least that's what it appeared as. The first thing he noticed was that it had two heads, both bearing blood shot eyes and sharp teeth. White fur covered the body and four long tails wagged in the back.
"Odd. I was sure that the spirits influence had reached you." said the left head with the female voice.
"And he's strong. Should a human be able to withstand us?" the right headed male voice said.
"Who are you?" They both asked, walking closer.
Allen stood up, blade in hand.
"My name is Allen. What the hell should I call you? The Siamese Mutts?"
The wolves barked and bared their teeth in anger.
"You dare mock us!? We are the twin wolves, Rah and Rai. We weed out the weaklings who enter our home, making one for them in our stomach." They yelled, digging their claws into the soft mud.
Allen leaped during their short monologue and swung his sword, aiming for their necks. The wolves noticed just in time and in the blink of an eye, they were at his side. Baffled, Allen hit the ground, rolling out of the way of a flurry of sweeping claws. Before Allen could get back on his feet, The wolves appeared above him. He blocked the incoming pair of claws, forcing him into the mud. The dual heads snipped at his face, he felt the sticky hot breath merge unto his pores. At this point, he couldn't tell if he was feeling the rain pelting on his face or if it was the beast's saliva leaking from it's jaws. Using all of his force he kicked the underbelly of Rai and Rah forcing them off his body. They whimpered on the ground for a second before regaining their composure.
"Not bad at all human, You have lasted longer than all of our other prey!" Rai, the female wolf head, said.
"But since we can't risk losing out on our dinner, we will finish this!" Said Rah, the male wolf head.
A white, electrifying aura covered the monster, the rain around Rai and Rah began to evaporate. They let out a piercing howl, Allen could feel a chill in his bones as the sound hit him. Within seconds, The beast had multiplied, there had to be at least a hundred replicas of the twin headed wolves. Allen's eyes went wide; the situation had turned against his favor.
"Oh shi-" The wolves didn't even let him finish his curse. They began to cut him from all sides, each hit knocking him around a circle. As the speed of the attacks increased, the air and rain picked up and created a small whirlwind that completely surrounded him.
"Haha we will make sure you are nice and tender, with a good amount of blood in and out of the morsel!" they both proclaimed, laughing as they continued.
Within the vortex of blood and rain, Allen still left lost. Although his mind was clear enough to sluggishly fight back, the doubting questions still left patches of darkness that hindered his progress. One of those patches lingered close, tethering along and never leaving the back of his mind.
Why am I still fighting?
It really did bother him. There was no sense in fighting anymore. He got his revenge, he had nothing left to lose. Death should have been a warm welcome for someone without a purpose.
"No, you are not done yet. You do have a purpose...You just haven't found her yet."
Allen stopped, planting his feet firmly on the ground. It was the voice again. The familiar voice that hit home with every word.
"Who are you?" He said silently.
"That is not important. You cannot die yet."
"Why not!? I have nothing left. No friends, no family, no ties to this damned world!" He yelled, trying to find the bearer of the voice.
"You have yet to fulfill what destiny has planned. She will need you when the time comes." The voice said, it sounded like it was closer now.
"Who is this girl you keep talking about? And why the hell do you keep saying I have something more to do!? I am done... my world is empty and barren, I'm alone... like always." Tears trailed down his eyes as he finished. He knew that life would always a lonesome journey, there wasn't anything left to live for.
Just then, Allen felt two arms embrace him from behind. He felt the warmth course through his body, it caused him to form a small smile.
"You are not alone, I am always watching you." it whispered in his ear.
"Now survive, for me and for her..." after the voice ended her sentence, the patches of darkness were illuminated and he was finally back in control.
He opened his eyes, golden orbs with diamond shaped pupils appeared. The eyes of truth shone through the bloody tornado that engulfed Allen.
"So that's how they are doing this. Hmmp!"
Allen took out the divine cross and slammed both the cross and the sword into the ground! An explosion of light decimated the whirlwind and the wolves dissipated, leaving only one left, the original.
Rai and Rah sluggishly sat up after the explosion, staring at Allen holding his divine cross blade.
"Thats impossible! How can a human be capable of such strength?" Rai said, her head trembling slightly.
"I will not be defeated by some skinny brat! You are nothing more than a snack holding a flashy sword!" raged Rah, readying his claw for some cleaving.
"I'm a little more special than other humans. But that's besides the point. I figured out your trick."
Allen dashed toward the beast, gripping the blade with all his might. The wolves appeared behind him again, but they weren't expecting the feeling of cold steel running between their chest. Allen had reversed the blade before they rushed his back and it slid into their mane. A wail like none other slammed into Allen's ears, but he didn't mind.
"You are fast, incredibly fast. With your speed, it should be easy to kill hundreds of humans in a matter of minutes."
The sword began to burn with a blue light. The wolves attempted to struggle away, but Allen's strength kept them in place.
"But you needed the edge just in case someone like me, a real threat, showed up. So the spirits of the forest helped by using their illusions to give your afterimages a tangible appearance."
Other parts of the wolves body began to glow in a blue light. The twins began to whimper and rage even more as the pain spread through out their body.
"Unfortunately for you...The eyes of truth can't be deceived." Allen said, eyeballing both Rai and Rah with resolute confidence.
The wolves let out one last horrifying roar as the light engulfed their body. It exploded in a radiant, leaving nothing but dust that seeped back into the soaked earth.
Allen stood in place for awhile, allowing the rain to cleanse away any leftover doubt he still carried. Then the sword fell out of his hand. He felt the world around him spinning and he waddled a bit.
"Haha, Damn it. I used the last of my strength trying to look cool."
Allen passed out on the muddy ground, his old wounds reopening up in the process.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
"Why are we going through here Dad? Isn't this forest cursed?"
"Yes it is my dear, but with this special covering Father Issac gave us, everything is protected."
"I wonder, how much you paid for this scam."
"It isn't a scam!!!"
The horse drawn carriage moved swiftly through the dense forest as the two passengers continued to argue.
Erica and her father, Talvo, are returning to their home after a successful trade deal in northern Bavaria. The trip back to their town was usually three days long to and from, but Talvo had an ingenious idea.
Before they departed from their bustling town, Randolford, Erica's father explained the special itinerary for this specific trip. They would hit the old roads until they made it to the forbidden shrubbery of the Hollow forest, crossing through it to make their mark early the next morning and then following the same path on the way back. Erica thought she wouldn't see the light of day but they had gotten lucky, not running into any of the rumored spirits of the forest at any time. But now a heavy fog covered their line of sight and it was becoming particularly hard to navigate. She felt that it was an appropriate time to bust her father's confidence.
"Can we please try to get out of the rain? Our cargo is going to get rui-" Erica almost finished her sentence, but she saw something odd on the road ahead.
It was a person, more specifically it looked like a boy. He seemed like he was unconscious. Confusion struck them, it was a peculiar event. But what was really unsettling them...was that he was seeped in a pool of blood.
