“Thank you for lending me Spoon’s services Mistress.” I say to Eve over the new hands free communication accessories for our C-Gears. I was flying on her Gyarados, and she was swooping around it on her Garchomp.
“I am still a little surprised at how well my pokemon listen to you.” She laughs as Garchomp pulls level with Gyarados. “Also, that nickname is so strange.” As we fly into a mountain pass she says, “Well anyways hopefully you won’t need to use them for much longer.”
Clearing the pass we enter a valley. Most of its floor is covered in crystal clear water, and two rows of draconic statues jut out of the water. They run the length of the valley and lead to a large set of stone step cut into the far end. We pass under a large arch that spans the valley’s width to land at the foot of the steps, or more precisely Garchomp landed on the small platform. Spoon decided to go for a swim. “Sure Mistress, they may accept my commands, but they are still your pokemon.” I say as the Gyarados growls a chuckle and swam its way over and helped me to the landing.
"How do you suppose we make contact with the locals?" Eve asked as we made our way up the steps.
I flash a grin. "Leave it to me!" I called out Duke from his Pokeball, and Thundara from her Luxury ball. Duke my Hitmonlee emerged rather nicely doing a few stretches and going to stand by the Mistress.
Thundara my Electivire however decided to go with her usually greeting. As soon as she solidified she grabbed me up and squeezed me in a giant hug. "Yes Thundara, I'm glad to see you to, now could you put me down!" She chuckles and drops me, then pats me repeatedly on the head. "Focus guys!" I huff. "Would you and Duke please announce our presence?"
Duke bows and approaches the doors. Thundara chuckles and does the same. Dukes, tenses his legs, and Tewy winds up her arm. "One!" BONG, BONG "Two!" BONG, BONG "Three!" BONG, BONG. Each hit made a clear loud sound.
After a few minutes with no answer the Mistress sighs. "You’re so goofy." She teases, pushing her way past me. "Sometimes I wonder how you would get along without my supervision. Why don't you try announcing yourself like a normal person?" She turns on the communication terminal next to the door.
"I'm sorry, but we don't accept visitors to th- Oh Lady Eve, was that you just now?"
Eve smiles at the girl in the monitor. "Yes, my servant," she said in that inflection. "He seems to have overreacted like he always does." She said. "Do you still have it reserved, Liza?"
The girl responds. "Yes of course. A few of the professors have shown an interest, but I have only allowed them to examine it." She laughs.
"Good, may we come in now?" The Mistress asked.
"Sure! I'll open the doors in a just a minute."
"Milady, what is going on?" I ask her.
"Well, unlike a certain spontaneous trainer, I actually think ahead." She replies. "Celestiums intelligence network heard about the clutch almost immediately after they were found. Most of the eggs were divided among the professors to give to starting trainers once they hatched, but I managed to put a bid in for the final egg. Of course Viktor and the others think that I was bidding for myself, but what they don't know won't hurt them." She laughs.
"Wait . . . I'm confused wasn't it my idea to come here after the gym battles at Violet?" I asked.
She smiles and responds. "Who was it that suggested we start the Johto challenge with Violet?"
"Oh, right." The only thing I can say.
"Now, we need to go and add a Charmander to our little group."
"Yes Milady."
The doors had opened revealing a deep semi-circle cliff with caves littering its walls. Several rather large Charizards were sunning, eating, or training all along the length of the valley end. Liza stood near the furthest cave from the entrance. She motioned for us to come to her. As we approached her yet another Charizard came into view. This one was somewhat smaller than the others, but seemed no less fearsome.
“Which of you is going to try for the egg?” Liza asked once we had reached her.
“That would be giddy here.” The Mistress motioned to me.
“It is always nice to hear your opinions on my emotional state.” I laugh, and then nod to Liza.
“Oh my, this could be a problem.” She said to us in a hushed voice. “This Charizard is still rather new here, and all of the others agree that the egg could be something special. I had their reluctant agreement to let a great lady try her luck, but I doubt they will be willing to let a servant try.”
Before the Mistress and I could respond the nearby Charizard rumbled and stretched. It then stood up and motioned for Liza to come over to it. After a short exchange between the two Liza turned and clapped.
“Well, it looks like you’re in luck this Charizard has decided to battle you. Win the battle the Charizards will let you have the egg. How does that sound?”
“That is a deal! Duke you good to go?” He flexed a few times and flashed me a ready sign. Before both the Mistress and Liza could challenge the decision I explained. “I know as a fighting type Duke is at a disadvantage, but he is more than capable of holding his own. He can go toe to toe with almost any of Lady Eve’s pokemon, many of which are flying or dragon typed.”
The Charizard just shrugged and nodded. He opened his mouth wide and fired several white orbs of energy at my Hitmonlee. Duke went into a series of rolls to doge the attacks. As Duke maneuvered himself closer to the Charizard I praised it. “Is that Dragon Rage? Awesome! Duke better force it into the air.” Responding to my direction Duke came out of a roll in front of the fire lizard motioning upward with its hands. Out of the ground in front of Charizard burst a sharp stone spike. Startled the Charizard reeled backwards and took wing.
The Mistress laughed. “Was that Stone Edge?”
“Well, it was supposed to be a surprise for our next battle.” I comment to her.
The Zard had recovered and started strafing the area with flamethrowers. “Duke, don’t forget the nickname you earned back at the Saffron Dojo.” Duke charged toward the nearest cliff wall. Without stopping he sprang up the cliff. Four, eight, ten feet he climbs. I hear Liza gasp. “Are you serious?” Duke pivots launching himself into the air. He passes over Eve, Liza, and I. “Now that is a High Jump Kick.” I say as Duke nails the stunned Charizard. It took a lot of damage, but recovers quickly grabbing the Hitmonlee’s wrists. Charizard adjusted its grip as it went into a series loops. It's speed increasing with each cycle of the loop. Finally it dived at the ground fearlessly preparing to drive both Duke and itself into the ground. “Well, I certainly wasn’t expecting that!” I say honestly surprised.
Both pokemon returned to their feet after the impact. Duke was bruised and scraped, but obviously still able to fight. Charizard roared, spewing a solid flamethrower into the air above it. The other Charizards laughed, roared, or used flamethrower themselves. “Glad you guys are enjoying yourselves.” I laughed.
“Duke!’ The Hitmonlee made an upward thrusting motion with his arms and more stone spikes erupted from the ground hitting the Charizard several times. Rather than faint like I thought would happen Charizard busted up the spikes and then exhaled a mighty blast of fire. “Shield Duke.” He threw up his arms in a blocking motion. A clear energy barrier blocked the fire attack just in time. “Wow that was close! Again Duke!” This time Hitmonlee charged toward a nearby tree, and Charizard chased it the spouting flames the whole way.
Once at the tree Duke charged right up trunk without skipping a beat. At the last second I noticed movement in the tree’s branches. “Duke!” he pivoted, but instead of lunching himself over the Charizard he opened his arms and legs wide creating another protective barrier. An excessively powerful flamethrower from the Charizard was barely repelled. Duke dropped to the ground.
Everyone stopped to look at the tree he had just saved. In it sat several Murkrows nesting, and a pair of very angry looking Honchkrows leered back at Hitmonlee and Charizard. After several very tense seconds the krows went back to preening and chattering amongst themselves.
Both Charizard and Duke shrug at each other and squared off again. Charizard charges at Duke going into a series of attacks ranging from claw swipes to tail sweeps. Duke, not to be out done, responded with punches and kicks of his own. After about a minute of this type of attacking they separate. Neither seemed to have made any serious hits, and both were ready to go at it again.
Just as they were about to start, a powerful sounding roar blasted out of the cave the Charizard had been sleeping in front of earlier. Charizard paused and listened then grumbled his response. Another annoyed sounding roar came from the cave. The male Charizard eyes bulged, but he turns and stalks back to his resting spot.
“It sounds like Charla has decided for Charizard.” Liza giggled. “You may enter the cave when you’re ready.” She smiles.
I toss Eve my Supply kit and pokeballs. “Would you please look after Duke, Mistress?” She nods as I move towards the cave mouth.
“I am still a little surprised at how well my pokemon listen to you.” She laughs as Garchomp pulls level with Gyarados. “Also, that nickname is so strange.” As we fly into a mountain pass she says, “Well anyways hopefully you won’t need to use them for much longer.”
