"Ugh . . . why do we have to slog through old ruins all the time? Don't, as top members of a large organization, we have grunts for this sort of thing?" I say to the lady I have been serving for the past several years, and the only person of late that can challenge my abilities.
Even in the gloom I could see a small smile flash across her face. "You know the other members are busy keeping tabs on Banzuke and looking for more clues. Plus," she says laughing as I help her into a large domed structure. "Silly, you are slogging. I'm supervising." She stops for a second to dust off her spotless white outfit.
I groan and say, "Don't I know it? Here I am sweating, and you look like you just got done shopping in Celadon." I continue on to say, "Ok Mistress, why are we in the Ancient Arena under Lavender Town?"
"You are from Kanto, right? Don't you know your own region's folklore?" she says in that special inflection she saves just for me.
"Uh, really, milady? That old Mew fairy tale?" I ask skeptically.
"Please don't say 'uh'; you know how that annoys me," she replies in the same inflection as before.
I give her back a rather ambiguous, “Yes" and a wink.
She blinks a few times, then crosses her arms and taps her foot for a few seconds. Finally she rolls her eyes and sighs. "Well, will you please tell me the highlights of this Mew story?"
"Uh, right, milady." I continue as I watch her face turn a slightly redder shade. "Lavender Town was not always known for its Tower. At one point, it had a very profitable arena." I took a breath and finished with: "The Champion of the Lavender Arena was granted the opportunity to encounter and possibly catch Mew." . . . "Wait, don't tell me those idiot researchers think we can encounter Mew down here."
"Those 'idiot' researchers must be on to something. This place actually exists." That fleeting smile crossed her face again. "I don't really think we will find Mew down here, but the organizer of this place must have had a way to summon it."
"Intelligent as you are beautiful, aren’t you?" A sharp voice cuts through the darkness from the center of the arena. I place myself between the approaching figure and Eve. "A noble lady if ever I saw one, and you armored one must be her knight." The dark figure chuckles. "You’re very brave to venture into the darkness all by yourselves." The man spreads his arms wide. "I have had plenty of time to explore this place, and may know where to find what you seek." He points at the Eve. “You! Girl, pit your brilliant light against my shadows! Win, and everything I know about Mew and any of the other legendary Pokemon I will share with you. I win, and the shadow you carry becomes mine. The rules of the Lavender Arena are simple: one versus one, the last Pokemon standing wins."
Always ready to battle, the mistress reaches for her PokBalls. "Wait; better let me handle this, milady," I say, grabbing my own PokeBalls. "What do you say to a test of wills?" I counter challenge the dark trainer.
"Brave and loyal knight! Fine, I accept! Come to me, Charizard! Let us show the fool the cold flames of darkness!" The shadows behind the dark figure solidified into the form of a fiery black dragon.
Without even blinking at this display, I give the man my best imitation of his own chuckle. "Perfect! I have been meaning to test Kamehameha." Selecting my own Charizard’s ball, Dusk ironically, I held it up and pressed the pressure button, releasing her.
She formed, curled into a tight ball. "Awe, really, lovely Kame, you’re napping now?" Her bright, beautifully colored orange scales rippled as she grumbled a reply. She then stretched out lazily and then walked over to the Mistress, who reached up and scratched her horns. "No, take your time, ladies. I only have a demonic dragon staring my down."
Eve smiled up at Kame and laughs. “Did you expect anything less from the daughter of the most famous Charizard, his Charizard?” Swatting Kame on the head playfully, the mistress gestures in my direction. “Oh, thanks," I say. In the blink of an eye, Kame launches herself over me and lands between the dark dragon and me.
“Glad to see you’re finally ready.” Kame gave a rumbling laugh. “Just be careful, alright? I have that same feeling I got just before you evolved.”
“Well if you two are done wasting my time? Good. Charizard, use Flame Charge!” The purple flamed dragon charges Kamehameha at an impressive speed.
“Ditto, Ka!” I shout, and she takes off as well.
They meet and lock claws, testing each others' strength. After a few moments, the trainer shouts, “Show them your Flamethrower, Charizard!” Opening its mouth the Darkzard spewed a stream of purple fire over Kamehameha.
She shuddered and they separated. “You still good to go?” I ask her. Kame roars her acknowledgement. “Then show me a true Flamethrower!” She builds up a strong fire before releasing it at her opponent. The stream hit its mark, but seems to have no effect.
“Charizard, take to the air!” the trainer shouts.
“After it, Ka!” I order. She manages to bite down on Darkzard's tail, and it cries out as she lets it go. “I think we know what the deal is now, right, Kame?”
“Do you, Knight? Then tell me, are you prepared for this? Charizard, use Thunder now!” the trainer counters. A terrific bolt comes from out of nowhere and strikes Ka.
She plummets toward the ground hard, but recovers just before she would have hit.
“Do it again!” the trainer orders Darkzard.
Without waiting for the command, Kamehameha drops to the ground, curls into a tight ball, and wraps her wings around herself in the form of a makeshift dome just before the second bolt hits. After the attack, Kamehameha stands, practically unharmed.
“Hahaha! What a clever move!” the Shadow Trainer exclaims.
Practically in my ear the Mistress asks me, “Should I summon Shayde?”
“Not necessary; we can finish this, milady,” I reply quickly.
“Then please do, Rai.”
“Alright, Kame, looks like you have permission to go nova. Better use the dark variation.” Kame responds by beating her stomach, flapping her wings, and generally working herself into frenzy. She finishes by rubbing her claws together, covering them in a dark aura, and launching at the Darkzard. After a fierce combo of bites, punches and feints, she pins it. “Show the imitation how a real Charizard does an electric attack.” Kame opens her mouth wide as a beam of electricity erupts from it. The attack shatters the illusion replacing it with a red-eyed Gengar. The side effect of the Zap Cannon had crippled its ability to battle.
“You win, Knight Rai. Time for your reward! Ha ha ha!” The trainer laughs gleefully as his Gengar turn into a miasma and envelopes Kame. “The rules of the Arena actually say ‘The winner of the Lavender Town Arena get a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. Your Charizard is powerful already, but I’ll unlock even more of its potential. Fear not, it will not be harmed . . .”
The mist drifted away from Kame, revealing a startling change. Instead of the brilliant orange color I was so used to, she was a startling obsidian color. “Whoa, you ok Kame?” She nods her head, and checks herself over, then shrugs and lies down. “Yeah you are fine.” I laugh, returning her to the PokeBall, then turn a stern eye to the trainer. “What about the information?”
“Oh, that. . . I was bluffing,” he retorts. “I haven’t left that stupid tower in forever. I highly doubt anything I know will be of any use to you.”
“What exactly did you do to Kamehameha?” I ask him.
“Nothing, the change is purely aesthetic.” The man grins. “I heard you talking about Banzuke earlier. There is a certain member I can’t help but torture. I’m sure you will meet him sometime, and couldn’t let the chance to mess with him pass me by. Do be kind enough to tell him you met me when you see him will you? . . . ha ha ha!” he says before fading away.
“Rai,” Eve says as she turns toward the exit. “How do you always find a way to waste our time with silly battles?”
I follow her to the exit and say. “Oh, come on, at least this one was fun, milady.” She just flicks her hair and glares at me. “Well it was!” I huff.
